Database management of areas of unique natural beauty unveiled by UN
Oct 27 2008, 09:59 AM
The United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) has recently launched a new archive as part of its data strategy to collate information on specific areas requiring environmental protection.
Work to gather information for the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) began 26 years ago and the data management project is now complete.
The database comprises details of 150,000 places of unique biodiversity that are deemed worthy of protection such as the Grand Canyon and World Heritage Sites.
Accessible via the WDPA website, the database is a useful resource, says Charles Besancon of (Unep). He told Voice of America:
"If you're a scientist, you might want to do some analyses from it and make some determinations about biodiversity protection, for example, around the world."
He added that the use of data quality software and multimedia ensures that the database is not only informative but also a visual experience.
An example of a Unesco World Heritage Site is the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park in the Philippines which is a rare atoll reef with a rich ecosystem.
