Data strategy to improve best practice in monitoring swine flu announced
Jul 23 2009, 17:39 PM
A new data strategy has been launched in the UK to improve best practice in dealing with the swine flu pandemic.
Healthcare IT company Emis has joined forces with the University of Nottingham to expand its QSurveillance database management service to collate swine flu patient data.
The anonymous information is gathered from 3,500 GP practices and will now include details of swine flu indicators and diagnosis.
Information is fed to the Department of Health to provide a real-time picture of the spread of the virus, which will facilitate UK-wide resource planning.
Mr David Stables, Medical Director of Emis and Director of QSurveillance, commented: "This powerful tool is enabling NHS planners to quickly identify swine flu hot spots across the UK, so that resources can be focused where they are needed most.
"The database gives the Department of Health an accurate national picture of the disease, as well [as] helping local services to respond more effectively."
The Health Protection Agency advises that people can minimise their risk of developing swine flu by improving general hygiene.
