Data quality lapses in public sector affecting millions, says report
Jan 26 2009, 10:11 AM
Research conducted by a data security company has found that poor data quality affects as many as "several million" public sector databases.
Online identity expert Garlik made 30 Freedom of Information requests to government departments at the end of last year and discovered serious inaccuracies in the data that was held.
Despite the existence of the Data Protection Act (DPA), relatively few public sector organisations were showing a commitment to best practice from a single citizen view.
Tom Ilube, chief executive of Garlik, commented: "What people really care about is that if the government holds your personal data, it is accurate and well looked after.
"A typical public database can have error rates approaching ten per cent, meaning that a single large government database could possess erroneous data on several million individuals."
The DPA is policed by the Information Commissioner's Office and affects the collation of identity verification details, the rights of those whose details are held and the responsibilities of those in charge of the data.
