Data quality standards need to be improved for the NHS' cancer strategy to become more effective.

This is according to a report from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which explained that while survival rates have been getting better, numerous gaps in basic information are affecting some services, reports the Public Finance website.

Margaret Hodge, chair of the PAC, said: "It is very disappointing that, a decade after publication of the NHS Cancer Plan, there is still not enough good quality and timely information on such important aspects of cancer services."

She cited areas such as the stage at which diagnosis takes place and whether chemotherapy has been used as ones that could be improved.

Last month, Conservative MP Bernard Jenkin, who is the new Chairman of the Commons Public Administration Select Committee, revealed government data quality standards and NHS patient accountability are areas that are likely to be investigated in the future, reported Public Service.
