Data quality improvements 'required by government departments'
Sep 8 2010, 10:48 AM
Issues with data quality need to be addressed by public sector bodies, it has been suggested.
Colin Rickard, Managing Director of DataFlux, told the Daily Telegraph that recent problems with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) sending people incorrect tax information should not have occurred.
He stated that while data legacy problems affect many private and public sector organisations, it is surprising government departments are not doing more to tackle data quality issues.
Mr Rickard said flagging up conflicting information and automatic checks would have helped prevent problems with wrong tax codes.
"Measures of this type are a relatively basic IT exercise," he stated.
Last month, an HMRC spokesman told the Telegraph that a new computer system it is in the process of phasing in will help to tackle the problem of incorrect payments.
"The new system raises the bar in terms of data quality and will in the medium term significantly improve overall accuracy," he explained.
