Data quality changes 'required at councils'
Sep 7 2010, 10:54 AM
Data quality challenges are facing local authorities across the country as they prepare to publish spending and salary information next January.
New rules that are intended to increase public sector transparency are being introduced, meaning councils will have to put more information into the public domain from early 2011.
Computer science professor Nigel Shadbolt told Computer Weekly that councils are doing the best they can to ensure data quality as they get the information prepared without going over budget.
"The assumption is that this is about repurposing existing resources and funding. It's not just about technology, but organisational and cultural change," he stated.
According to recent research conducted by The Information Difference, nearly 80 per cent of companies that have a data governance programme at their organisation feel it is vital to run it ahead of, or alongside, data quality and data management initiatives.
Dr David Waddington, senior vice president and co-founder of The Information Difference, said governance procedures give data quality projects a greater chance of success.
