Councils in the UK are being urged to improve best practice in data quality and database management, in light of the findings of a recent report.

The Audit Commission called on the public sector bodies to enhance data management processes and improve data quality for the benefit of those relying on such information to make key decisions.

Despite nine out of ten councils identifying accurate and relevant information as a priority, only 5% were rated as having excellent data quality.

Steve Bundred, Chief Executive of the Audit Commission, commented: "Giving decision makers the information they need will help councils make savings while improving services.

"This is all the more critical in recessionary times and some solutions have little or no extra cost."

In other news, earlier this year (June 24th), a report by eCopy found that public sector organisations were not making use of efficient data management processes with only 42% of employees using document management systems.
