Data quality assurance 'needed to support the Big Society'
Feb 18 2011, 09:31 AM
Government departments are going to have to work on improving the quality of their data standards as the government presses ahead with the Big Society initiative.
According to a new report from the National Audit Office (NAO), the use of charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to help deliver public services will require a "step change" in information management within the public sector, reports the Guardian.
Existing ICT systems in place in government will face new demands because of the scheme, with information quality assurance work part of this, along with identity authentication.
"Implementing big society initiatives will create new challenges for government ICT to open up access to information and enable central and local government systems to talk to each other and civil society," said the study.
Earlier this month, Socitm president Jos Creese told the Public Service website that the government's drive for greater transparency is likely to highlight data accuracy issues in the public sector.
