Data management professionals 'concerned about governance'
Sep 2 2010, 10:59 AM
IT professionals responsible for data management would like to see data governance procedures implemented at their organisation.
Loraine Lawson, a blogger for IT Business Edge, stated that data governance is often ignored by business users and "budget-focused executives", despite the potential commercial benefits it can bring.
Instead, it is often left to data management professionals to put forward the case for proper governance procedures.
Ms Lawson advised that the best way to sell it to the rest of an organisation is by identifying a specific problem which it can help to tackle.
"Starting small might not be the wholesale attitude adjustment the business needs right now, but at least it's a step in the right direction," she suggested.
According to a recent survey conducted by Deloitte, one key data management challenge for businesses is the separation of information between different departments.
More than half of those questioned named 'departmentally siloed information' and 'limited cross-functional interaction' as their top two data management issues.
