Data centres must be powered by renewable energy, says Greenpeace
Apr 1 2010, 11:33 AM
Greenpeace is urging organisations such as Facebook, Apple and Mircosoft to power their data centres with renewable energy.
The environmental group claimed that electricity used by large IT companies is often generated by burning fossil fuels, the BBC reports.
Tom Dowdall, a spokesman for the organisation, told the news provider: "Growth in the IT industry is leading to a fast-growing carbon footprint."
He noted that the launch of portable devices means that cloud computing is becoming more commonplace.
This has resulted in an increasing amount of data is being stored on servers, Mr Dowdall added.
Social networking site Facebook recently announced plans to construct an information storage facility in Prineville, Oregon.
In related news, the Green Grid consortium recently launched two free online tools aimed at helping data centre managers to improve efficiency levels.
Businesses can use the tools to identify areas where energy is being wasted and how much they are spending on cooling.
