Data access should be 'an integral part' of UK growth agenda
Jan 24 2012, 13:43 PM
The economic and societal benefits of data should make it 'an integral part' of growth ambitions in the UK, according to a recent blog post featured in the Guardian.
Data capture across public bodies has accumulated in a eurozone that is incredibly data rich, but this data should be both managed and used to create economic and societal benefits in the region. The large investment made by the EU will make a substantial return on investment if the data is used by the wider business community.
Data quality management is essential to insuring this task is achieved, because the quality of the data is more important than the capturing of it. In this way, the data must be easy to access and stored to use.
Data analytics are a way of achieving smart data without any risks. Privacy will be a central theme as more data is rolled out, but as long as the data is well managed, it should never be an issue.
According to the blog's authors, global and UK public sector leader Costi Perricos and Harvey Lewis, director of research and insights for Deloitte Analytics: "Public bodies must develop the analytics capabilities needed to share, store, analyse and act upon the data they produce, collect or pay for."
The Open Data Strategy is still in the early days of implementation, but there have been some useful and positive results that have already been implemented as part of the initiative.
It's Your Parliament is a revolutionised mechanism of political transparency, allowing citizens a unique overview of the votes cast in the European Parliament. Another site that will open EU transparency is Europe's Energy, which combines data from Eurostat and other agencies to produce graphics which visualise Europe's commitments to reduce energy consumption.
Businesses and members of the public will have benefited from the UK Pharmacy app, which is one of many smartphone devises that uses EU data to allow the user to search for the nearest pharmacy. Using nearest address locator software the user can find the closest pharmacy based only on a postcode or place name.
