Councils 'need data security specialists'
Mar 5 2010, 13:26 PM
Public sector organisations should employ data security specialists to ensure that personal information is properly stored, it has been suggested.
Chris Ensor, technical director of CESG - the information assurance arm of GCHQ, said that is the best way for councils to ensure they meet their requirements under the data protection act, the Local Government Chronicle reports.
"While there is lots of good work going on in different parts of the public sector, bringing a holistic approach to information assurance professionalism is going to be key to ensuring information risks are being properly managed," he commented.
The government is keen to improve its data management practices following several high-profile breaches in recent times.
It was announced last week that a new training programme has been launched for employees of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.
This follows a major data leak in 2007, affecting around 25 million people.
