Consumers urged to check credit reports regularly
May 7 2010, 11:23 AM
Checking credit files regularly is important in order to prevent identity fraud, it has been claimed.
Writing for ecomparison.co.uk, Jessica Haynes said it is important that people monitor their financial activity and check their credit reports with the major agencies.
"Keep in mind that checking one does not necessarily tell the whole story. Some businesses only report to one agency, while others report to two or all three," she commented.
When it comes to shopping online, people should ensure they only buy from websites that have been certified as secure. In addition, Ms Haynes noted that consumers should change their passwords on a regular basis and refrain from using the same one for several sites.
UK fraud prevention service Cifas recently revealed that identity fraud increased by 20% during the first quarter of 2010 compared with the same period last year.
Furthermore, it was shown that there has been a significant surge in crimes that use the current address of victims.
