Companies may need to improve customer data management

Nov 24 2011, 11:04 AM

Customer data management may be an area that a number of companies benefit from improving, if recent suggestions are anything to go by.

Keeping on top of such information can hold obvious benefits when its comes to dealing with people in the most effective manner and could also play a part in ensuring that corporations remain organised enough to stay in line with legislation.

However, research from Osirium has indicated that many organisations are perhaps not as on top of their data management as they should be.

It found that seven per cent of businesses surveyed never deleted data, while 40 per cent were uncertain that all information had been removed before disposing of hardware.

Osirium pointed out that this could lead to a "serious data security breach" and may potentially be misused in the hands of criminals.

The company's Chief Executive Officer David Guyatt stated that as technology progresses a number of enterprises will be looking to replace some of the items currently in use.

"Some devices may be reusable and will therefore have a second-hand value, whilst others will only be fit for the dump. Either way, at some point in the refresh cycle all devices will ultimately end up in the hands of third-parties and as their eventual destination cannot be guaranteed or controlled the appropriate care must be taken," he said.

Commenting on the findings, Analyst and Director at Quocirca Bob Tarzey added that skilled hackers may still be able to uncover information that has been deleted in the normal fashion.

He suggested this may mean some corporations who believe they have acted correctly have not actually done so.

Data management improvements might prove important for a number of UK councils as Big Brother Watch recently revealed that 132 admitted to losing information in the last three years.  ADNFCR-794-ID-801220128-ADNFCR
