Cloud computing included in new government ICT strategy
Apr 4 2011, 09:33 AM
Cloud computing on hosted systems will have a role to play in the government's new ICT strategy.
Plans have been announced by Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude, who revealed a cloud computing scheme with implementation plans is to be published and will detail how services are set to shift to the technology.
"Cloud computing delivers infrastructure, platform or software as a utility service, giving government the capability to respond to changing operational needs," said the strategy paper.
It added that a standardised cloud platform will let developers, including small to medium-sized enterprises, generate "innovative solutions".
The report went on to point out that the government's use of the cloud needs to balance being open with data and treating sensitive information with the right level of care.
Last week, Mr Maude said one of the key aims of the government's new ICT strategy is to cut down on duplication and wastage through the use of common systems across different departments.
