Child protection data strategy is launched

Jan 26 2009, 10:33 AM

Public Sector

The government has announced that the new ContactPoint database has been launched today as part of a data strategy to ensure best practice in child protection.

Creation and implementation of the data strategy cost £224 million and the database itself contains the contact data of millions of young people under the age of 18 as well as their schools and GPs.

Child protection workers, health and education officials will be among the public sector workers who will have access to the information.

Lord Laming, who conducted the inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie that prompted the construction of the database, commented: "ContactPoint will not replace the need for children's services organisations to ensure effective working across teams… including sharing information where this is appropriate."

Children's secretary Ed Balls added that the data strategy will enable vulnerable children to be identified and helped before they are subjected to any harm.

The data strategy is designed to ensure there is not a repeat of the murder of Baby P, who was killed at the age of 17 months at the hands of his mother and her partner in 2007 and Victoria Climbie who died aged eight after suffering abuse from her great-aunt and her partner in 2000. Both children lived in Haringey.
