Challenges to EU's open data strategy
Dec 21 2011, 16:24 PM
The government has been commended for, but warned about the implications of its new open data strategy.
Commentators have stressed the importance of data quality and data management in operating the enormous vault of information held by the government, as well as recognising the importance of data sharing for economic competitiveness and public sector costs.
Information Society Alliance (Eurim) believes information should be treated as an asset, to be valued, maintained and protected, reports Guardian Government Computing.
Data quality management is the difference between a data resource and a data chore, and the public sector must rebuild its skills to manage and use information, at all levels, including technical and professional, as a matter of urgency, according to Eurim.
Dr Edwards Phelps, secretary general at Eurim, told the news provider: "While the government should be applauded for its aim of opening up data on public services to save money and stimulate economic growth, it is absolutely essential that government departments understand the risks associated with data sharing and the procedures that should be followed."
