Businesses 'should be straight with consumers when collecting data'
Jul 8 2010, 16:04 PM
Businesses have been warned that flouting online privacy rules could lead to the loss of customers and action being taken by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
In a speech on data protection earlier this week, Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said it is important that organisations are honest with the people when collecting their details and appealed to businesses and public bodies to be honest.
"Organisations must be transparent so that consumers can make online privacy choices and see how their information will be used," he commented.
Getting privacy right means businesses will retain the trust of their customers, Mr Graham added.
The ICO revealed earlier this year that more than 1,000 data breaches have been reported to the organisation to date.
Companies are urged to ensure staff are properly trained in handling data and understand how valuable personal information can be when it is in the wrong hands.
