Best practice IT 'boosts business efficiency'

Small businesses that invest in best practice IT can improve their business efficiency, it has been claimed, and subsequently improve their profits.

According to Business Link, a government-funded organisation offering support to small enterprises, companies that proactively adopt technology are likely to use it more efficiently and effectively as a business tool.

Ganesh Selvarajah, an advisor at the service, suggested that small and medium-sized enterprises which are owned by or employ younger, more technically-literate people, are more likely to invest in advanced technology solutions.

"In the context of SMEs, they'll be using some fairly advanced technology to carry out business," he added.

Mr Selvarajah was responding to a survey by salesforce.com, which suggested that SMEs are turning to cloud computing as a means of establishing a single citizen view while lowering the overall cost of IT.

Despite the continued importance being placed on IT by organisations, a report from Forrester Research issued earlier this year forecast a 3% drop in spending on IT products and services this year.
