Advice to avoid credit card fraud
- Sep 1 2008, 11:44 AM
Following the recent news of UK consumers' bank details being sold on internet auction site eBay, Fairinvestment.co.uk has offered advice on avoiding credit card fraud.
With thousands of people falling victim to the crime each year, the website is encouraging vigilance on the part of the consumer.
Credit cards spokesperson Matt Edwards explained that fraudsters are constantly looking for new ways in which to rip off consumers.
"All you can do is be as careful as possible and keep a constant eye on your finances. That way if anything does happen you can get it put right as soon as possible rather than being slack and risking losing thousands" he said.
"One of the best ways to tell if you have been a victim of identity theft or fraud is to get a credit report which will reveal whether anybody else has been applying for credit under your name.
Other suggestions for consumers are to keep PINs and passwords hidden and avoid emails from strangers in case they contain viruses or are part of a phishing scam.
Retailers should also take steps to protect themselves and their customers against fraud by checking the identity of customers during transactions.
