Address verification can reduce consumer complaints

Online retailers that focus on data cleansing in order to improve address validation can save money and reduce instances of customer dissatisfaction.

That is according to Internetretailer.com, which suggested that weeding out bad addresses from databases can help companies minimise the risk of dispatching products to the wrong addresses.

The technology website claimed that one of the biggest threats to the data quality of an online vendor's records is "customer error" when entering in delivery details.

Citing evidence from companies that provide address verification software, it claimed that as many as one in four addresses entered into order forms on internet retail websites contain errors.

Incorrect postcodes and misspelled addresses for purchases that are being sent to a recipient other than the buyer are among the most common mistakes.

"The solution is address correction software that flags address errors and asks shoppers to enter the correct address," Internetretailer.com said.

Last month, a poll of medium-sized businesses by Lloyds TSB Commercial revealed that one in four plans to implement a data strategy including an increased focus on advertising.
