Achieving a successful data governance programme is 'difficult but not impossible'
Jun 16 2010, 11:30 AM
Achieving an effective and sustainable data governance programme is challenging, but not impossible.
This is according to industry commentator Jim Harris, who suggested that issues can be overcome as long as everyone within an organisation is working towards the same goal.
Writing for his OCDQ blog, he noted that the unique corporate culture found within every business "carries with it the intricacies and complexities of politics that Niccolo Machiavelli wrote about in his book The Prince".
Mr Harris explained that although politics may be the prince of data governance, organisations will have success in this area as long as communication and collaboration are king and queen.
Speaking in a blog post earlier this month, he said that without effective enforcement, data governance policies are "powerless to affect the real changes necessary" within a company.
He advised managers to use clear language when communicating with people and to encourage open discussion.
