1 in 3 Oracle users have giant databases

- Jan 15 2007, 17:00 PM

A third of Oracle users (31 per cent) manage databases that are larger than one terabyte (TB) in size, a new poll reveals.

The study of the Chicago-based Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG) members discovered that the number of Oracle users managing huge databases has risen from just 13 per cent at the beginning of 2006 to almost one in three at the start of this year.

According to the report by the IOUG, data growth is now so rapid in most businesses that it is causing storage problems and firms are advised to cleanse data regularly in order to free up space.

Large quantities of unstructured data, including video, email and graphics files, and information generated by customer transactions and compliance requirements are being blamed for the majority of data growth creating problems for database administrators.

The poll of 335 members of the IOUG found that 60 per cent had found that lack of available storage affected performance and some businesses had been forced to delay implementation of applications because of storage shortages.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has unveiled a new one terabyte (TB) hard drive for the retail market this week, the Deskstar 7K1000, for around $399.
