The Experian QAS Application Process: A Guide for Placement Students

Thank-you for your interest in the Experian QAS placement scheme. We understand that for many of you applying for a job may be a daunting prospect. However, we believe that the application process should be as simple as possible. That's why we ask for only a CV and covering letter, which will be a useful foundation to build on in the future, rather than an extensive online application specific only to our role.

Getting Started

First impressions count and your CV is no exception. Assessing a CV is a critical part in progressing or rejecting an applicant. With our advice and guidance we can assist you in writing a well prepared CV. This is a vital step to success and will equip you beyond your placement year and into your career.

How to write a great CV and Covering Letter

The covering letter: This should form the first page of the CV document that you submit to us. A covering letter should be targeted towards the company and role that you are applying for and succinctly outline your qualifications and ambitions for this role.

The CV: Your CV should be visually pleasing with good formatting, correct grammar, and no more than two pages long. It should include your personal details, education, work experience, and any specific skills you may have. Remember, work-life balance is important at Experian QAS, so make sure you also include your hobbies and interests outside of academia.

The Application Process

You may not be sure exactly which of our placement roles is best suited to you. Therefore, you have the choice of either applying to a specific placement role, or making a more general application. All of our successful applicants will receive guidance and advice throughout the process on which of our roles is best suited to their skills sets and ambitions.

We require that each candidate submits their CV with a covering letter in one document. This can either be done online at: or via email to placements@qas.com.

Due to the high volume of CV's received we are unable to provide individual feedback to all applications. If you have not heard from a member of the recruitment team within 10 working days then you can consider your application unsuccessful on this occasion.

If your CV application is successful, then you will receive a call from a member of our recruitment team within 10 working days. This will involve an initial chat about your application and booking in a phone interview.

The phone interview will be conducted by one of the line managers involved in the placement scheme and should last approximately 30minutes. If you specify interest in a particular role in your discussion with recruitment then your phone interview will be booked with the relevant line manager for that team.

The phone interview will cover your background and interests, as well as your understanding of the role and our company.

For the phone interview please ensure you are in a quiet location, will not be disturbed and that you have good phone reception. We encourage candidates to make use of the information available on our website (www.qas.com) in their preparation. Consider our company culture and values, as well as the products that we offer. Most importantly make sure you think about what your key strengths are, how you can fit into the company, and why you want to work with Experian QAS.

If you are successful in your phone interview then you will receive an invitation to one of our assessment days in January. If you are unsuccessful then you will receive feedback from our recruitment team, which should give you an idea of things to work on in future applications.

We know that many candidates may panic at the thought of an assessment day. However, the wide variety of activities involved in assessment days makes them a great chance for you to shine, wherever your strengths lie.

Our assessment days are designed to fain a better understanding of what you are really like. Getting the right fit of individual is the most important element in all of our recruitment, and our placement schemes are no exception to that.

For both successful and unsuccessful applicants the assessment day will undoubtedly be an enormous learning curve and an experience which you will be grateful for in the future (although you may not think it at the time!). We understand that there is huge potential for development and growth in all of you, and our assessment day is designed to best identify your talent.

When attending our assessment day, ensure that you follow the five P's and you can't go wrong!

Punctual

Make sure you allow plenty of time to get here and research your route beforehand. Call ahead if you are going to be delayed.

Polite

General good manners are expected, both towards Experian QAS employees and fellow candidates. Remember, we have a number of placement vacancies. Treat other candidates as allies rather than competition; they may be your colleagues in the future!

Professional

We advise you to wear a suit and behave professionally at all times.

Proactive

Ask questions - curiosity is one of our core values. Ensure that you use your time in our offices to the best advantage. Make sure that we are the right company for you.

Positive

You may find some parts of the day challenging, but keeping a positive attitude is the best approach to take.

Structure of the day

The morning session
The morning session will involve meeting current placement students and managers, a presentation about the company, an office tour, and a number of group activities.

Lunch
Lunch will be provided.

While all candidates will attend the morning session and the lunch, only those selected as successful in the morning session will be asked to stay and attend the afternoon session. If you are not asked to stay then you will be given feedback and advice before you leave. This will cover where you can improve, and what you can work on in the future.

The afternoon session
This session will involve an interview and a test. During the interview we will want to discuss topics such your background, relevant experience and interest in your chosen degree subject.

When answering questions consider the following:

  • Take as much time as you need to give a thorough and well-thought out answer
  • Don't be afraid to expand on answers should you feel it appropriate
  • Ask your own questions

The test is designed to establish a basic standard of ability, and is not something which should panic you. It will involve basic verbal and non-verbal reasoning. It will not determine your success in securing a placement. This will be a result of your performance on the day and at interview, along with your personality.

If you are unsuccessful in the latter half of the assessment day, a member of our recruitment team will be in contact within 24 hours to provide feedback, in positive both areas and those where you can improve. We see this as an important part of the process, and hope that candidates will use such feedback to their benefit.

If you are successful on the assessment day, the relevant line manager will be in contact to offer you the position within 24 hours.

You may verbally accept this immediately, or need time to think this over. In either case, we ask you to contact the recruitment team within 24 hours to confirm your decision or to discuss this further.

Once you've accepted then the salary of £18,000 plus benefits, start date and references will be covered and finalised in your conversation with the recruitment team. You will receive a soft copy of your contract via email within 24 hours of your acceptance, and the hard copy within 72 hours. Following acceptance you will need to email the recruitment team two references contact details, preferably one work and one academic and who will ideally have been informed of this beforehand.

We view the months between offer and start date as an opportunity to welcome our new placement students on board. Your manager and team members, including the current placement student, will be in regular contact. This is usually via email and will be a chance for you to ask questions, as well as being offered advice regarding relocation, the work environment and what you can expect from your year placement with us.

Where possible, many prospective placement students will come and meet their team and even join them for lunches or nights out, giving you insight into one of our key core values: work smart, play hard! We will also hold a placement lunch with both current and prospective placement students, giving you a chance to meet those in the same boat as you. This is something which may be particularly beneficial for those who will be relocating.

Most importantly, we will do all we can do make the transition from student life to working life as smooth as possible.

We look forward to receiving your applications!
